Muse of Fire

Muse of Fire

I was unfamiliar with John Scalzi, but he seems to have quite a few books out there – including several short read books. I was not overly impressed with this one. He has a decent story telling process, but I did not think this plot really ever got going – 28 pages was just not enough. I do think it was promising enough to try another of his books.

As always, this is a short review for a short book. For more, check out Amazon.

I rate my books as either YES (I will read again) or NO (I will not read again). This gets a rating of NO.

The Book Case

The Book Case

This is a 59 page mystery by Nelson DeMille. The story revolves more around the police Detective investigating the crime than the victim or criminals. Everyone is secondary to the Detective. It is a decent whodunit. It is not obvious how the crime was committed. There is a funny little kicker at the end.

I rate my books as either YES (I will read again) or NO (I will not read again). This gets a rating of NO. However, I do recommend reading the story at least once. I ran through the story rather quickly because it was an entertaining read.

The Dudes Abide: The Coen Brothers and the Making of The Big Lebowski

The Dudes Abide: The Coen Brothers and the Making of The Big Lebowski

This one is a little different. I usually read action or adventure or mystery or something by Stephen King. This one is 49 pages of non-fiction. I am not too familiar with the Coen Brothers. I have seen Raising Arizona, but that is about it. Though I have not seen The Big Lebowski, it has such a cult following that I thought “the making of” would be interesting. I was correct. This is a quick read – I ran through it in one sitting because I did not want to put it down.

Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists

Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists

These 63 pages explore:

  1. Dolores Umbridge – not as much background as I would have liked
  2. Ministers for Magic – worthless
  3. Azkaban – probably the highlight
  4. Horace Slughorn – decent, not as good as the piece on Azkaban
  5. Potions/Polyjuice Potion/Cauldrons – worthless
  6. Quirinus Quirrell – a wasted opportunity to give us more background on an important character
  7. Peeves the Poltergeist – decent, better than I thought prior to reading

The Green Mile

The Green Mile

This is a great story that was turned into a Tom Hanks movie. It was originally released in a series of six books (a serial novel) that seemed unique at the time. At 548 pages, I can barely include this as a short read (so, each original book did average less than 100 pages).

I am not sure if the original six books are even available except as used. You can always search Amazon! Whether you get the original six or the current one, this is a very good read.

As always, this is a short review for a short book (if you consider it six books!).

The Only Game In Town

The Only Game In Town

This is another book that does not fit into my “short read” category because it has 513 pages. However, it is actually a collection of 32 articles from The New Yorker (on average, well within my definition of a short read). Baseball is on the cover, but there are a lot of stories about other sports. While sports is the theme, the articles are really about life. The stories span many generations of writers – Ring Lardner to Malcolm Gladwell.

This is an easy book to jump around in, so you can start and finish an article if you have a little down time. Get more info on Amazon.

Dear Mr. Holmes

Dear Mr. Holmes

210 pages! Why am I saying this is a short read book? Well, it is actually seven stories compiled into one book. Plus I love the “Holmes On The Range” mysteries. While not every story is as good as Hockensmith’s full length novels about the Old West brothers that love Sherlock, this book will give you an opportunity to visit their world seven more times. He really needs to come out with another novel about these guys – it has been too long!!

I rate my books as either YES (I will read again) or NO (I will not read again). This gets a rating of YES.
